BOOSTing Workforce Outcomes

The Clinic celebrated Valentine’s Day with new and returning partners for the first Organizational Development session of WorkBOOST NYC‘s Cohort 2. We are thrilled to welcome back Madison Strategies Group and Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow as they build on the foundation of financial security building laid in the first year of the project, and introduce four new partner organizations: CAMBA, Comprehensive Development, Inc. (CDI), Seedco, and Year Up. Madison Strategies Group Program Director, Alex Holt, offers his thoughts for the new cohort, as well as advice for all workforce development organizations seeking to introduce financial security strategies to their work –click here to watch!

As we approach the end of WorkBOOST NYC’s first year, the results are promising for a future of building financial security long past the length of this project. With all four workforce development partners embedding financial security in their programming, we have already seen 350 individuals receive ‘light-touch’financial coaching from frontline staff and 100 referrals to the onsite financial coach, resulting in 68 financial security outcomes achieved –6 participants have already accomplished a financial goal! Watch as Implementation Lead, Erica Mancinas, describes one such success story.

The Clinic is grateful to JPMorgan Chase &Co., the Ira DeCamp Foundation, and Tiger Foundation for generously supporting WorkBOOST NYC Cohort 2.

Sharing the Workforce Love

As we grow through the successes of WorkBOOST NYC, the Clinic is excited to use its experience, lessons-learned, and best practices to give jobseekers financial independence with new partnerships across the workforce development field:

1. The Clinic Capacity Building team recently began trainings to launch a new project with staff at national, award-winning workforce development organization, Grant Associates, to integrate financial security building services into their programs.

2. We are joining forces with Per Scholas to conduct a needs and assets assessment across all of their national locations (Columbus, Cincinnati, National Capital Region, Dallas, and Atlanta), create a plan to optimize financial security building services for each market, and deliver training to frontline staff. Per Scholas offers rigorous, tuition-free technology training to motivated and curious adults who are unemployed or underemployed for successful careers as IT professionals. We have previously worked with Per Scholas’Bronx location to support the creation of their financial capability services, and in 2013 as a part of WorkWonders, a capacity building initiative for New York City-based workforce development organizations.

Stay tuned for updates from these partnerships and more soon!

What Are You Using Your Refund For?

On Saturday, February 4, the Clinic held an informational tax breakfast event, generously hosted by Make the Road New York in Jackson Heights, Queens. Participants learned top strategies to file for free, how to file as a cash earner and make the most of a refund, and scheduled appointments. A few individuals were so prepared, they were able to get a head start on filing with the onsite VITA Intake Counselor. In the kids corner, children and parents alike let their artistic abilities shine at the “What I Want to Save For”drawing and coloring station!

If you were not able to join us, have no fear –Assistant Director of Services, Karen Goodheart, has compiled some of the best ways to use your tax refund, captured in our newest blog post. Read it here!

Stay up-to-date on the status of your refund using the IRS’s Where’s My Refund? tool.
